About the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal Print E-mail

The tribunal is responsible for deciding the remuneration that is payable to local government mayors, deputy mayors and councillors as outlined in section 183 of the Local Government Act 2009 and in accordance with section 39 of the Local Government (Operations) Regulation 2010. The Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal also establishes processes for dealing with allegations and makes determinations regarding councillors' conduct that is not in accordance with the principles and obligations set out in the Act.

The tribunal is an independent body responsible for deciding categories of local government - following consideration of criteria set out in the Act - and assigning each council to a category.

The tribunal decides the remuneration to be paid to mayors, deputy mayors and councillors - according to the categories the tribunal has established - by 1 December annually.

A report on the tribunal's determinations must be made to the minister responsible for local government annually and published in the Queensland Government Gazette. It must also be tabled in Queensland’s Legislative Assembly.

The most recent report regarding remuneration for local government councillors was published by the Local Government Remuneration Tribunal in December 2010.

The Tribunal is also responsible for hearing and deciding the most serious complaints of misconduct by local government councillors.

The members for the Local Government Remuneration and Discipline Tribunal are appointed by the governor in council. The tribunal comprises three members, one of which is the chairperson.

As required by the Public Sector Ethics Act 1994, the tribunal has obtained the Minister’s approval for a Code of Conduct (PDF Icon 707 KB) for tribunal members.
