Using the website
Parks 4 People presents information from the Register of Land for Public Recreation. The register of land for public recreation and other sources of data are integrated to provide a centralised reference on recreational lands and to help promote healthy lifestyles.
Parks 4 People offers an interactive map and access to report summaries of land for public recreation information. You can also use the interactive map to have your say regarding a particular site.

The interactive map allows you to explore the Parks 4 People information using the following tools:

Tips for using the map
- Zooming in and out – use your mouse wheel or double click on the map.
- Drag map – click and hold your mouse pointer.
- Stuck or lost? – select the reset icon to start again.
- Nearest park to me – a lower search radius is initially recommended, as a larger search radius may require scrolling through a long list of results.
- Select a location – single click on the map.
If the location is a Parks 4 People site, relevant property information will be displayed in the ‘Site Info' box, where you can also have your say about this site.
If the location is not in the Parks 4 People site, some property information will be displayed in the ‘Site Info' box, where you can also have your say to highlight an error or suggest why it should be in the Parks 4 People site.
Map searching
When I search for a park by name or use the nearest park tool, why can't I find the park name?
Acquiring all the park names is a work in progress. Councils are currently supporting this process and you can also help by providing the name of any park–see Have your say below.
When I search or select a site, why does the marker sometimes appear next to the park?
The marker will normally appear at the centre of a park. If a park has an unusual shape or is made up of multiple sites, the centre may shift outside the actual park area.
When I search for a park, why do some park names appear more than once?
The map service works on a property by property basis and some parks are made up of multiple ‘sites'. In the near future (when we have more park names registered), we will update the map service to recognise the full extent of a park so that the name only appears once.
Have your say
Get involved and share your local knowledge to improve the accuracy or usefulness of Parks 4 People. For example, you can:
- tell us if any sites are incorrectly identified as land for public recreation
- point out if a site that is accessible for public recreation has been missed
- provide more information about the recreational facilities at a particular site
- vote on how good a site is and what you use it for
- suggest new sites for consideration as land for public recreation.
There is no need to register to have your say, simply select any area on the interactive map and follow the directions!
Having a say
What is Have your say?
This provides an opportunity for you to use your local knowledge to improve the accuracy or detail of information. You can also vote on how good a park is. First select any park on the map, then follow the instructions for adding information.
You can also select an area that is not currently a park, where you will be provided with a different Have your say option (e.g. to suggest that this area should be a park and to give the reasons why).
Why do I have to enter the four digit number to register my comments?
This prevents malicious software flooding the system with false/unwanted records.
What happens to my information after it is sent?
The results of all ratings for a particular park are aggregated and published under Visitor Ratings.
All reported map errors will be reviewed and, where appropriate, included in scheduled map updates.
Information regarding requests for facility upgrades will be collated and passed on to the managing authority of the park. This will be reviewed and assessed within the context of current priorities of the authority and budgetary constraints.
Comments provided by the public will be passed on to the managing authority of the park.
Please be aware, you will not be automatically provided with a response.
Why can't I see other people's comments?
At this early stage we aim to understand the levels of interest and types of comments being provided, such as the results of site votes and preferred activities. Other comments relating to fixing errors and omissions will be processed and reflected in future updates to the map.
