Review of Iconic Queensland Places Act 2008 (IQPA) (repealed)

The IQPA was introduced to ensure the natural features and environment that local communities considered to be iconic, in certain parts of Queensland, are considered by local government in their planning and development processes. Four iconic places were declared under the IQPA including Blackall Range, Central Capricorn Coast, Douglas and Noosa. Iconic panels were also established to consider and assess development applications in these iconic places.

The department undertook a review of the Iconic Queensland Places legislation in 2010. The review considered the operation and effectiveness of the Act, including the effectiveness of the development assessment panels and the need to continue their functions. The final review report ( 536 KB) was laid before Parliament on 15 December 2010 making recommendations about the panels and the future for iconic places.

Sustainable Planning Act 2009 (SPA)

Amendments to the SPA relevant to the continued protection of the four declared iconic places commenced on 3 June 2011.

Amendments to the SPA included:

• continued recognition of the current declared iconic values until such time as the relevant local governments have amalgamated schemes in place
• inclusion of iconic impact reports, as per the IQPA, until such time as the relevant local governments have amalgamated schemes in place
• continuation of iconic panels, replacing their development assessment role with an advisory role relevant to impact reports in plan making, where relevant to iconic values.
