Module 3 - Local government in Queensland Print E-mail

Local government plays an important role in community governance, providing a democratic, accountable and efficient system for local decision-making.

Under our federal system of government, only the Commonwealth and existing state and territory governments are recognised. Local government is not recognised in the Commonwealth Constitution, however it is recognised in the Queensland Constitution.

This section provides an historical overview of local government in Queensland, information about how local government works and what councils do.
