You should now have an understanding of the origins, history and functions of local government in Queensland.

The Local Government Act 2009 established local government in Queensland. Developed over a long period of time, the legislation is designed to make local government an autonomous level of government.

While there is diversity of local government in Australia, the law-making role and the executive role of local government are its main features.

As elected representatives, councillors have a responsibility to ensure local government:

  • delivers high-quality services in an effective and efficient manner
  • achieves goals through collaboration with other levels of government, industry and community stakeholders.
