As with any major decision, you should be clear about why you want to stand for election to your local government.

The role of councillor requires enthusiasm and motivation. Consider the following and how they might influence your final decision to nominate for election:

  • being of service to your community
  • helping set the strategic direction for local government through corporate planning, financial management and policy development
  • being actively involved in resolving the key issues and challenges facing your local community
  • making sure sure all members of the local community have equitable access to the services and opportunities provided by local government
  • advocating on behalf of members of your local community, managing this against broader community interests
  • learning new skills in such areas as policy formulation, corporate planning, advocacy and budgeting.
